Polynesian Tattoos

Throughout time tattoos have been a large part of culture and identity. Through this project I have looked at the visual langue surrounding 3 different styles of tattooing, that has stood the test of time! I will explore the visuals surrounding American Traditional tattoos, Traditional Japanese style tattoos and Traditional 'Moko' tattoos of the Maori culture of New Zealand.


During this project I looked at many images of the tattoos in Maori culture. I noticed that lots of the images features swirling patterns and a lot of line work. After looking this I wanted to create animations focusing of circular motions. The first image/animation I created feature circular cut out of tattoos flashing on and off the screen, the screen shot to the left of this statement represents the layout of the animation. Although I was unhappy with the outcome and decided to try out something else.
